BMR Calculator
Basal metabolic rate via the Mifflin-St Jeor equation.
What BMR means
Your basal metabolic rate is the energy your body needs at complete rest for breathing, circulation and cell repair. This tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation — men: 10w + 6.25h − 5a + 5; women: 10w + 6.25h − 5a − 161 (weight in kg, height in cm, age in years) — widely regarded as the most accurate for the general population.
From BMR to daily calories
Multiply BMR by an activity factor (1.2 sedentary up to 1.9 very active) to estimate total daily energy expenditure — or use our calorie calculator, which does it for you.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my BMR lower than my friend's?
BMR scales with body size, muscle mass, age and sex. More lean mass means a higher resting burn.
